What started as a normal trip to a Center Moriches Dunkin’ Donuts on Sunday, Jan. 14 soon ended in heartbreak when Meghan Schepps’ son, Hunter, lost a stuffed animal close to his heart.
“He might be a little too old to have a stuffy, but he wasn’t ready to give it up quite yet,” she wrote.
According to Facebook posts by Schepps, the orange and green stuffed dog was accidentally left on the floor of the Dunkin’, located at 790 Montauk Highway. An employee told the family that they had seen the dog picked up by someone else after the Schepps had left.
Now, over a week later, she’s still hoping that someone can return the dog, named Spike, to her son, who is “heartbroken.” Hunter had received Spike from his first-grade teacher, four years prior to losing the toy, and has been a friend and companion ever since.
Kind community members have offered to send Hunter a new Spike – which Schepps says “means the world and is helping him accept what happened.”
But her ultimate goal is still to reunite Hunter with his original Spike.
“I know the chances are slim, it’s been a week since Spike has gone missing. But if anyone out there has him please return him! No judgment,” she pleaded.
She encouraged anyone who may have the toy to return it to the Center Moriches Dunkin’ where it was lost, adding that Miss Huey, Hunter’s first-grade teacher, has even offered to make a new stuffed animal to any child who would be so kind as to return Spike.
“Still posting in desperation…Please help us bring Spike home,” one of her posts read. “It would mean more than you’ll ever know.”
